Trader Joe's Sign Art

Who said there's no jobs in art? Working at Trader Joe's was an incredible experience and I am grateful for landing such an opportunity fresh out of college.  Trader Joe's gives their artists complete freedom to create and market their brand. Every store is unique and has there own team of artists that manage store decor, display marketing, all signage needs, and more. With over 3,000 SKU's per store, it is quite a task to handmake every sign. That's right, every single sign and shelf tag is original and handwritten, down to a can of corn. We had no access to computers, just paint brushes. This creative freedom is really what makes their brand successful. "No Bureaucracy" is one of their seven values and they hold true to that. When I came into work, no one ever told me what I had to do. It was completely up to my initiative to take care of signage needs and decorate the store as I saw fit. When I first started, one of my managers said to me, "If you want to come in and paint the bathroom, do it. And if you don't like, just come in tomorrow and paint it again." This kind of creative freedom came with great responsibilty. They didn't tell you what to do because they wanted to see who would step up to the plate. Trader Joe's a truly a place where an artist can shine.
